Join us for an engaging and interactive Creative Placemaking Deep Dive: Moving from Ideas to Community Impact, designed to transform your understanding and application of Creative Placemaking as a practice of using arts, culture, and design to bring people together, reshape community spaces, (re)vitalize neighborhoods, and empower communities to lead positive change.

This advanced seminar series includes four dynamic sessions that blend instruction with interactive discussions, insights from practitioners, and real-world case studies. This deep dive is a collective learning experience in which participants learn from each other and from people who are using Creative Placemaking in their communities. Thought-provoking exercises and short "homework" assignments keep the learning momentum going between classes.

Creative Placemaking Deep Dive builds on the foundation of the Creative Placemaking: Creating Communities We Love Through Arts & Culture, Diverse Partners and Community Spaces course, but you don't have to have attended the basic course to take the deep dive. There's no prerequisite, no requirement for a specific skill, experience or degree, and no specialized knowledge needed. Just a commitment to your community and a willingness to engage fully. So if this sounds interesting, we'd love to have you with us.

Take advantage of the discounted combo rate if you want to take both courses. Creative Placemaking is offered in Fall 2024, and the Deep Dive in Winter 2025.

SESsion descriptions

Session 1: Small Steps, Big Change — Dig into how to build and sustain momentum in your community by making incremental progress that everyone can see and feel. This session will cover strategies for allowing projects to unfold organically while maintaining direction and achieving real progress. Discover ways to pique community interest and increase involvement through small events, pop-ups, and engaging activities. Explore using small funding resources effectively, integrating fundraising into your events, and generating volunteer enthusiasm. And learn to avoid burnout and sustain your passion for the work over the long term.

Session 2: Creative Placemaking for Climate Resilience — Discover how Creative Placemaking can support both community and climate resilience. We'll delve into strategies and real-life examples, drawing inspiration from projects that intertwine environmental sustainability with cultural vitality. Practitioner contributions and case studies will provide grounded perspectives.

Session 3: Pathways for Navigating Municipal Processes and Rules — This session focuses on the complexities and opportunities of working with local government to implement Creative Placemaking projects. Explore effective strategies for collaborating with municipal processes, overcoming regulatory challenges, and supporting government-led initiatives that foster equitable community development. Engage with case studies and practitioners who have bridged the gap between community and government to create impactful projects.

Session 4: Creative Placemaking and Placekeeping as Forces for Equity — Explore the dynamic interplay between Creative Placemaking and Creative Placekeeping, and their implications for advancing equity in communities. Understand the balance between these approaches to avoid negative impacts like gentrification and displacement, and learn from practitioners who work at this intersection. Redefine success metrics to reflect the preservation of cultural heritage and community-led development that promotes social justice.

Course Instructor

Michele Archie is a principal of The Harbinger Consultancy. She brings 30 years of experience with community engagement and community economic development in rural communities across the West and throughout the country to this course.

Michele will be joined by live and video guest presenters — creative place makers who will share their experiences and insights with participants.

Every class will be presented live and available for replay in case you need to miss a session or want to review.
$525 regular course fee/$425 early registration discount through August 31, 2024.
Group rates for two or more participants from the same organization or community — $425 per person regular group rate/$375 early registration discount.
